Hazardous Makeup?
Did you know that a Fall 2007 study by The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics found that 61 percent of thirty-three lipsticks tested contained a detectable amount of lead, and several exceeded the Food and Drug Administration’s lead limit for candy. A whole range of lipsticks were counted in the thirty-three, from Burt’s Bees Lip Shimmer to L’Oreal Colour Riche. To see whether any makeup products that you use contain mercury or other potentially hazardous ingredients, you can visit the Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep Web site (www.cosmeticdatabase.com), which lists information on more than 27,000 cosmetics and personal-care products.
